“What if I made a mistake?” Clara asks her friend Vincent as she watches while he’s fishing the leaves from the pool. It’s something that Niels would normally do, but Vincent offered to come and help and it saves her having to spend the afternoon alone with her thoughts. She hates that, plus she enjoys talking to Vincent. She likes how he always seems to listen. His eyes following her every move and his attention never waning. Him being as good-looking as he is, she’s always thought it such a waste that he’s gay.

“Do you think you have?” He pauses, looking straight at her, and once again she rues the twist of biological fate that meant this man is attracted to other men when his eyes seem to darken as he does.

Clara shrugs. “What do you think?” It’s a genuine question, and she’s interested to hear his opinion. She likes how he obviously cares so much. Or at least he seems to. And when their friendship only sprung up out of chance after she met him at the gym, it’s kind of sweet how he’s so happy to act as her sounding block. But that’s what gay friends are for, isn’t it? Conversation. And shopping.

“It doesn’t really matter what I think. You’re the one who has to live with him. Or not. It is your choice.”

“That doesn’t help.”

“Well, do you love Joshua? Or is it just sex?” The smallest of smiles playing out on her lips as she frowns. “Come on. How do you feel about him, Clara?”

“Like he’s the best orgasm I ever had. But it’s not just sex. Love, though. That’s a big word.” One she isn’t sure exactly fits when Niels is in her thoughts more often than he isn’t. “I suppose the biggest thing is that I didn’t intend for this to happen. It really was just supposed to be about the sex. And it was in the beginning. But things got messy, and I guess I realised that Niels wasn’t so invested in us as I thought he should be.”

“Hence Joshua’s position in your life was elevated?”

“I wanted Niels to sit up and take notice. Only he didn’t. Honestly, it was a disappointment. I expected Niels to put up more of a fight, and when he didn’t, I guess I threw myself into the Joshua situation and here we are, but all that said, Joshua is so…” Pausing, she turns away and stares across the garden to towards the house.

“Sexy? Irresistible? Hung like a donkey?”

“All of the above. Plus, greedy and selfish. A little egocentric. And I know Niels could be thoughtless at times, but Joshua is just so self-absorbed. You know, in the beginning, I think I only really liked him as much as I did because he was so determined to have me. It’s a turn-on, isn’t it? Well, I think so. See what you want. Take it. No questions asked. You know what I mean?”

Vincent doesn’t respond to that, so she turns back around.
